In the world of fashion and beauty, the great thing is that everything old eventually becomes new again! The crew at Sloans hair salons have scoured the globe for the latest old school looks that come courtesy of the perm (yes you read that right… THE PERM) that sparked many a hairstyle regret back in the day, but that is hitting the runways by storm at the moment. If you were too scared to give it a go back then then (and we don’t blame you), you’re in luck because the perm is back and it’s better than ever!
So… let’s go through some do’s and don’ts before you rush to the salon to ask for an updated perm. Scott Sloan says” The first thing to note is that perms are, you know… kinda permanent. Make sure you’re ready for the commitment. If your hair is damaged or extremely thin, the perm process is probably not for you.”
Modern perms aim for a more natural look than their 80s predecessors. Jordan Hone from Sloans of North Sydney hairdressers says “It’s a great way to give straight hair some movement without additional heat and styling. There are also techniques where hair can be straighter at the top with the bend in the hair starting at the mid-length and ends. We are also seeing a big shift away from the over-styled curling iron waves to a more natural air-dried texture.”
Idy Duong of Sloans of Lane Cove hair salon adds” We are not talking frizzy 80’s perms, but soft beachy waves. Consult with your one of us at Sloans as the size of the perm rod will ultimately be the end result of your curl. A larger rod will give you that soft tousled look which feels more current. It’s a very personalized thing.”
