08 Sep SUMMER BLONDES ARE MADE IN SPRING
So, Spring is finally doing its thing and thoughts are turning to lazy days at the beach, rosé wine, perfect pedicures in summer sandals, a new wardrobe of floaty dresses and of course, a moderated hair look to complement that summer skin. With the change of season, for many of our clients, we at Sloans of Lane Cove and Sloans of North Sydney will propose a lightening of your hair colour to lift your face out of the depths of winter and highlight your natural summer glow.
Sounds simple right? However, wannabe blondes beware: this is not a process which happens overnight, or indeed in one sitting of the hairstylist’s chair, oh no! Changing hair colour from brunette to blonde is a process. It takes time. It takes patience. It takes love! Think of it in terms of baking a cake: what happens if you throw it into the oven on a high heat for as quick a time as you can get away with? It will burn, that’s what! So… you go low and slow and you watch it turn the perfect shade over time. This is how we need to look at hair if you are thinking of going from brunette to blonde. In this way, we are looking at minimal damage and strong, beautiful conditioned locks.
However, there are a few questions you should ask yourself before you hit the blonde button:
- Is blonde complementary to your eye colour and skin tone?
Ultimately, you’re looking for a shade that will complement your coloring: ashier blondes complement cool skin tones, while golden shades work better on warmer ones.
- Can you dedicate time (and money) to multiple appointments and at-home treatments?
Look at someone like Khloé Kardashian who has been lightening her hair for years: going from ombré to babylights to a whole head of highlights—to get that famously bright shade, so you can imagine how many color appointments she’s had to get to this point.
- Is your hair in good shape?
Scott says” I would definitely advise sorting out the condition of your hair before embarking on a blonde odyssey! Colouring damaged hair can affect the color itself and how it is absorbed in the hair, so the end result could be compromised. Ensuring your hair is healthy enough to keeping going lighter and lighter is another job in itself – treatments will become your new best friends!”
- Are you happy to step away from the straighteners?
No matter how fabulous the condition of your hair or the quality of the products we use at Sloans (which are of course the very best) the fact remains that going from dark to light will cause some stress to your hair. If you are a heavy user of straighteners or wands, this can compound the damage by weakening the protein bonds within the hair fibres. Jordan says “If you absolutely can’t live without them, then please invest in tools with temperature settings so you can work with a lower lower temperature and don’t forget to use use a heat protector!”
If you are thinking about ‘blonding-up’ for Summer, then now’s the time to start talking the talk. Head into one of our hair salons in Lane Cove or North Sydney for a blonde consultation and get ready to shine!
